Essentials in English (B1)

Effective communication in academic, professional, and everyday life necessitates having a sufficient control of the essentials of grammar and vocabulary. In this course, these essentials are logically explained and then practised in context. Participants will have the opportunity to train speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Essentials A2 explores the following themes:

  • education and learning
  • symbols in science and society
  • ethics in sports, business, and research
  • data and facts
  • the environment and natural resources.

The following functions are covered:

  • presenting institutions and the self
  • defining and explaining
  • comparing and contrasting
  • expressing stance.

The language covered includes:

  • present and past simple and progressive tenses
  • complex and simple sentence structures
  • formal and informal registers
  • hedging verbs.

This course is the first in a series of three (A2, B1+, B2). In the follow-up course, participants have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and skills at a higher level.

Requirements

Requirements for acquisition of credit points

In order to receive credit points, candidates will

  • not be absent more than twice,
  • participate actively in the course,
  • submit four satisfactory written assignments (if an assignment is unsatisfactory, it may be resubmitted once),
  • deliver an oral presentation,
  • pass a progress check with at least 60%.

You can get a total of 2 credit points.

Students are assessed by means of a portfolio (pass/fail).

Certificate of attendance

In order to receive a certificate of attendance (available on request) for this course, you are not allowed to be absent more than maximum two times.

Placement test

This course requires either an obligatory computer placement test or completion of a preceding course. If you have not attended a preceding course, a computer placement test has to be taken prior to registration.
