English for Sports Scientists

English is becoming indispensable to pursuing a degree and career in sports science. This course develops communication skills that will help you succeed in your Bachelor or Master program and beyond.

The course focuses on competence in subject-specific academic English. Participants will improve their ability to read journal articles, write research abstracts, give presentations, and participate in discussions in an academic context.

The course will also move onto the field to practice English in a variety of training situations. Participants will learn vocabulary and grammar that are relevant to specific topics (such as health, nutrition, and exercise) or address their own individual needs.

Attending the follow-up course Speaking and Writing in the Natural and Health Sciences is highly recommended.

Entry requirement: At least two semesters in the Sports Sciences programme.

Requirements for acquisition of credit points

In order to receive credit points, candidates will

  • not be absent more than twice,
  • take an active part in the course,
  • submit four satisfactory written assignments (if an assignment is unsatisfactory, it may be resubmitted once),
  • deliver one oral presentation, followed by a class discussion.
  • submit a portfolio consisting of the four written assignments, along with the improved versions thereof, and the support materials for the oral presentation.

You can get a total of 3 credit points.

Students are assessed by means of a portfolio (pass/fail).

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE STARTING DATE OF THIS COURSE IS DETERMINED BY THE DAY ON WHICH THE SPORTTAG ACTUALLY TAKES PLACE, WHICH DEPENDS ON THE WEATHER.

  • If there is no Sporttag on 26th September, the course will start on 26th September.
  • If the Sporttag does take place on 26th September, the course will start on 3rd October.

Your lecturer will confirm with you by email on 24th September whether the course starts on 26th September or 3rd October.

Certificate of attendance

In order to receive a certificate of attendance (available on request) for this course, you are not allowed to be absent more than maximum two times.

Placement test

This course requires either an obligatory computer placement test or completion of a preceding course. If you have not attended a preceding course, a computer placement test has to be taken prior to registration.
