Effective communication means having reasonable control of the essentials of grammar, including the major present, past, and future tenses. It also requires appropriate vocabulary to describe and discuss topical issues and interact with others. In this course, these foundations are logically explained, expanded, and then practised in context.
The focus is on English for academic purposes but also includes some aspects of professional and everyday life. Current topics from a range of disciplines and a variety of media are used to train participants’ speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.
We offer two programmes at levels B1-B2. Programme A is offered in spring; programme B in fall.
Programme B covers the following topics:
- Expanding vocabulary by engaging in conversations about careers, personality, health and current global issues.
- Reviewing the basic tenses in English: present, past, and future. For example, you will enhance your use of these tenses by associating them with specific topics like career planning (I think I will be a good fit for your team.).
- Using modal verbs to express obligation and permission. This includes phrases such as: You must respect others' privacy online; but you don't have to share your own.
- Developing academic writing skills using discourse markers with themes related to personal well-being. Examples include additive markers (in addition, furthermore), cause-and-effect markers (consequently, therefore), and contrast markers (however, on the other hand, and nevertheless).
- Delivering an academic presentation on a topic in your field of study, using a visual aid, and participating in a discussion.
This small-group course is capped at ten participants to facilitate intensive learning.
