English for Health, Life and Natural Sciences

Across the health, life and natural sciences, expertise in English as a lingua franca is a prerequisite. In this course, you build vocabulary and develop the analytic reading, listening, speaking and writing skills necessary to understand and actively participate in university courses and research as well as interact effectively with others in the workplace.

Some of the topics we will cover include:

  • Writing and speaking about complex cause-and-effect relations
  • Describing processes and methods clearly and accurately
  • Presenting, analyzing and discussing results in a rigorous manner
  • Balancing assertive and cautious language to convince others of your findings

This course offers you plenty opportunity to develop confidence and fluency when speaking to others about current scientific topics. It also offers you ample training in turning what you read, hear and think into scientific writing that is cogent and enthuses your readers.

The course is suitable for students across the health, life and natural sciences such as sport, exercise and health, medicine, nursing science, environmental sciences, life and physical sciences.

Prerequisite: At least 2 semesters of study in health, life or natural sciences.

Requirements

Requirements for acquisition of credit points

In order to receive credit points, candidates will

  • not be absent more than twice,
  • submit four satisfactory written assignments (if an assignment is unsatisfactory, it may be resubmitted once),
  • deliver one oral presentation, followed by a class discussion,
  • submit a portfolio consisting of the four written assignments, along with the improved versions thereof.

You can get a total of 3 credit points.

Students are assessed by means of a portfolio (pass/fail).

Certificate of attendance

In order to receive a certificate of attendance (available on request) for this course, you are not allowed to be absent more than maximum two times.

Placement test

This course requires either an obligatory computer placement test or completion of a preceding course. If you have not attended a preceding course, a computer placement test has to be taken prior to registration.

Replacement date

The supplementary replacement date for lessons that might not take place is: 07.12.2019 from 10:00 - 16:00.
